What Makes a Fashion Brand Ethical? Exploring ethical fashion practices is crucial for understanding the true cost of our clothing.
In this article, we will discuss common ethical practices in Fashion and what makes a clothing brand sustainable.
Key Aspects of Ethical Clothing Production
'Sustainability' or 'ethical' are broad concepts. But they apply to various sectors and research fields.
Often, it can also get tricky to define who's responsible.
However, 'Values and ethics are fundamental grounds also for sustainable fashion.' (Kirsi Niinimäki, 2015).
What are Ethics? Definitions & Differences
The University of Sterling distinguishes between 'Personal ethics' and 'Research ethics.
Thereby, Personal ethics act as a guiding direction, directing individuals and organizations towards responsible behavior.
This 'compass' points towards three key values:
- self-respect,
- respect for others,
- respect for the environment.
On the other hand, Research ethics builds upon these fundamental principles, applying them specifically to research activities.
This includes ensuring ethical considerations in
- research design and implementation,
- respecting society and the individuals involved,
- utilising resources responsibly,
- addressing potential misconduct,
- adhering to relevant regulations.

UK Government: Ethics & Sustainability
In 2020, the UK government launched a new initiative. It is the All-Party Group for Ethics and Sustainability in Fashion (APPG).
The party connects professionals and individuals. They foster engagement for a responsible apparel sector. This extends beyond the United Kingdom (APPG, 2024).
Fair Labour Practices
Firstly, we should look at some general standards and definitions of fair work and associated practices.
To create a truly fulfilling work experience for individuals in the fashion industry, several key aspects come into play.
Examples of Fair Labor Practices
These include opportunities for productive employment that provide fair compensation.
Additionally, a safe and secure workplace environment with social protection is crucial.
Furthermore, fostering personal growth and implementation within society is essential.
For businesses, a culture of non-discrimination is vital. This means equal opportunities and treatment for all people. Gender and other factors should not matter.
This extends to ensuring employees feel free to voice concerns within the workplace (UN Global Impact, 2024).
Current State: Responsible Working Conditions
There is a lack of regulation in developing countries. This concerns ethical work practices in clothing production. It is unlike enforcement in the Western world.
Demand for fast fashion has increased. Labor prices are lower in places like Pakistan. Outsourcing to less regulated locations is enticing. Many brands find it appealing (Ross, 2021).
Post-Covid-19, fashion brands prioritize environment actions. They focus less on fair labor issues (Vogue Business, 2021).
Jon Bird mentioned a survey in Forbes. Nosto insights show customers desire responsibility. But they do not want to pay premium prices (Forbes, 2019).
Only 29% of customers would pay extra. This is for identical products created sustainably. Yet, 52% want eco-friendly fashion methods.
Furthermore, reductions on eco-friendly apparel goods are something that 62 % of customers would like to see (Nosto, 2019).
What Can Organisations Do & Support to Access ethical fashion practices?
The Centre for Sustainable Fashion (CSF) powers research. It also provides intelligence and learning. This supports the textile sector's responsible development.
Why not try to network with professionals who dedicate their work to sustainability in fashion?
This might be the best option. It helps find qualified staff. It ensures awareness of innovative projects. Or it expands brand knowledge generally.
Sustainable Materials
Fashion businesses should design durable goods. They should use sustainable materials. Products should be repairable or easily recyclable (Meital Peleg Mizrachi and Tal, 2022).
What if you are a consumer or fashion brand wondering about the quality of fabrics you are planning to use?
In this case, you can refer to national or international standards.
For example, the OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is widely accepted. It labels fabrics tested for harmful contents.
Research Sustainable Materials & Textile Development
OEKO-TEX offers free access to a database. It is called 'Buying Guide'. It helps visitors find certified products, suppliers, or trademarks.
Findings differentiate by product level. You can refine specific materials or supplier locations.
A company called Oceanworks, based in California, United States, offers fabric and yarn, produced from waste plastic.
The plastic is recycled and sourced entirely from the ocean.
Financing opportunities exist for entrepreneurs. This is for those developing sustainability in fashion.
UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) posted a program. It is for circulars and textiles. This financial program from 2023 is still on its website financial programme for circulars and textiles.
The application would go towards a total fund of £6 million GBP.
Finance recipients' projects should enhance data. This includes collection, analysis, and evaluation. It provides baselines for environmental effects. Research validates circularity.
Transparency
There is an annual 'Fashion Transparency Index', led by the London-based, social enterprise called Fashion Revolution.
We found a slideshow posted by the file-content-platform issuu, featuring the Fashion Transparency Index for the year 2023.
Transparency between brands and consumers is key. The report shows only 12% share a 'responsible Purchasing Code of Conduct' (Fashion Revolution, 2023).
Environmental Impact
The environmental impact of the apparel industry has increased negatively over time.
The reason is fast fashion. This long-term trend fosters unethical production. It also encourages irresponsible consumption and waste.
Fast fashion producers quickly distribute cheap clothing. Consequently, low-quality products often end up in landfills (Williams, 2022).
The environmental challenges expands in its complexity.
